New Workshop Offering! Sketchbook: Creative Chronicle

Want to jumpstart your creativity and record the special moments in your life?

My sketchbook course is now open for enrollment!  Read on for details.

Sketchbooks: Creative Chronicle

Join me for an in person workshop in Asheville, NC! September 30, October 7, October 14 Saturdays 1-3pm.

This class is designed to inspire you to maintain a sketchbook practice of your own that fits your goals and interests.  By experimenting with a variety of techniques, subject matter, and media, we will explore various approaches to creative expression that give you the tools to create a meaningful visual journal of your life.

The best part of a sketchbook is the feeling of play and experimentation that it can bring- there’s no place for perfection here!!  In fact, making ugly art is part of every artist’s journey- they just don’t share those on Instagram.

We will experiment with watercolor ink, watercolors, acrylic paint, pencil, pen, and more.  Each class will include a discussion, a demo, and time to work independently together on projects.

I’ll also send out weekly emails with an overview of some of the things we discuss, with some images and links for inspiration.  The class size is small so we can create a container of calm, focused, creative energy and can inspire each other to stick to it!

While this class will be very beneficial for those who already identify as artists, every level and experience range is welcome.  All you need is curiosity, an open mind, and the willingness to try something new.

We will meet for 3 2-hour sessions at The Haw Creek Commons in Asheville over the course of 3 Saturdays.

Saturdays: September 30, October 7, October 14 from 1-3 pm.

Course fee is $165 which includes some materials to explore during class.  There is an additional materials fee of $20 if you do not already own a quality watercolor set- I’ll provide one for you to keep!

You are required to provide your own sketchbook, a few brushes (for watercolor and acrylic), a pen, a pencil, and an eraser.  You are encouraged to bring your own beloved supplies beyond that list.

How to Enroll

In order to reduce costs, I’m directly accepting tuition through Venmo or Paypal (as ‘send money to friend’) to avoid service fees.

The class size is limited, and I will stop accepting enrollment when the class is full.

To enroll, please message me HERE on Facebook and I’ll send you my links to my Venmo or Paypal.  If you prefer another method, let me know what works for you.

Please note that there are NO REFUNDS for this course, so please be sure you’re able to attend all classes.  I count on the full tuition to make sure my expenses and space rental fees are covered and can supply the class with art materials my prep and teaching time.  Thanks for understanding!

If for some reason I need to cancel a class, I will schedule another date to make it up and use Zoom if you’re unable to make it in person.  Hopefully that won’t happen!

Class Syllabus

Day One:
Intention-setting for your sketchbook practice, warmup exercises, sharing examples from my own sketchbooks, and a lesson in portrait drawing and watercolor ink washes.  We will each create a portrait of a creative person we admire in either pencil or ink and then embellish with watercolor inks and a quote.

Day Two:
We will look at some examples of self-portraiture from art history and contemporary makers and discuss the advantage and benefit of self-portraiture. We will each sketch out our self portraits and then paint with acrylic paints to create a colorful self portrait in our sketchbooks.  We will talk about color experimentation, refresh on tips to improve accuracy of features, and spend time working on our selfies.

Day Three:
Brief explanation and demo of watercolors in order to do a watercolor study of a place of importance to each of us, with a few warm up exercises.  We will share and discuss (as interested) in what has been challenging/rewarding about the course and your goals moving forward.

At the end of this course, you will have worked in watercolor, pen or pencil, acrylic paint, watercolor ink, and possibly some other fun surprise materials.  Walking away with confidence and enjoyment you experience, you can explore these in your sketchbooks in your own unique way!

Why focus on portraits and landscapes in different media?

When we look back at our lives, it’s the people and special moments that mean the most to us.  Getting some practice in portraiture and landscape makes it a little easier for you to dive into documenting the people and memories that mean the most to you!

If you feel intimidated by portraiture, that’s ok! Remember that practicing your artistic skills in any direction will apply to all of your work. Not being intimidated by portraiture will open up a whole new subject range for you! It’s good to stretch our creative wings! It might not be as scary as you think.

This Class is for you if:

You want to invite more creative expression into your life

You want to have a visual record of your evolution and memories

You’re looking for ways to connect with your creativity

You’re ready to enjoy making art for art’s sake

You’re curious abut trying new art supplies and techniques

You’re willing to show up for yourself in a nourishing and fun way

You want to recapture the joy of what it felt like as a kid to draw and paint for the fun of it, without worrying about what people will think of it or who will see it

I made this video when I had a cold so it’s pretty low energy! But it does go over the class, so give it a view if you’re interested!
