12/52 and 13/52 – A Portrait a Week

Well I’m late!  Since I missed last week, here are two pencil sketch portraits I finished of my grandmother, Eris.

These are based on color slide photographs of her when she was about 18 I think.  As I understand it, a novice photographer spotted her on the street and asked if he could photograph her for his portfolio since she was so lovely.  It’s a wonderful thing to have color photographs of my grandmother at that age.  Of course, pencil sketches don’t do them justice and I plan to do a painting or two of them in the near future.

Absolutely beautiful–yes, yes–a painting of self avowed “parrot in a black and white world”!… because you know Eris is asking…but where’s the color?!

Thanks! The sketches were very fun to work on.
Yes, a painting is overdue. The color slides are so beautiful and he really was a great photographer- lots of subtle light play and beautiful colors.

Just looked at them again – the hair is really remarkable especially how you capture the light hitting it.

She has fun hair to draw! The photographer did a wonderful job capturing the light and colors.

but translating that to a pencil sketch takes real talent! Beautifully done!
